FM Alexander - Founder of the Alexander Technique
Founder of The Alexander Technique, F M Alexander was born in Tasmania in 1869.
His first love was the theatre and he became a professional reciter of dramatic pieces in his twenties. During this period, he became aware of problems with his throat which doctors were unable to resolve. His career under threat, he took matters into his own hands, believing that something he was doing in the act of speaking was causing his difficulties. He determined to find out what it was, and his findings are outlined in one of his books called The Use of the Self. Link to the Read All About it page
His discoveries about his own habitual patterns of behaviour led him to see similar patterns in other people, and to look at how we might all improve our use of ourselves and thereby our general health and well-being. Encouraged by a doctor in Sydney he began to teach his methods, eventually moving to London where he established a training school and published a number of books. He died in 1955.
